When comet ATLAS was first discovered, astronomers trained global telescopes towards this glowing streak of light to witness what could have been the brightest comet to zoom past Earth. However, the object disintegrated into smaller pieces in just a few months, baffling researchers worldwide.

Astronomers now believe the comet was part of an object that swept within 23 million miles of the Sun - 5000 years ago.
