19-year-old Samarth Chavan had spent his whole life training and preparing for the examination which would have confirmed his status as an expert in Taekwondo. In August 2019, disaster struck in the form of flooding that devastated his family’s farmland in the village of Khochi, in western India’s Maharashtra state, ruining £1,700 worth of sugarcane crops. “Had it flooded two weeks later, he would have been a black belt champion by now,” says his father, Ranjit.
