IBM quantum computer passes calculation milestone

Scientists at Google and IBM have evidence that quantum computers will soon beat ordinary ones at useful tasks, such as calculating the properties of materials or the interactions of elementary particles. In a proof-of-principle experiment, researchers simulated the behaviour of magnetic material on IBM's Eagle quantum processor and managed to work around quantum noise to get reliable results. Quantum error correction will enable calculations impossible on classical supercomputers.
