The oldest pyramid is the Pyramid of Djoser in Saqqara, built around 2630 BCE. It predated the Great Pyramid of Giza by about 70 years and was designed as a step pyramid by Imhotep. In Peru, the ancient city of Caral (2627 BCE) contains pyramids that may predate those in Egypt. Controversially, Gunung Padang in Indonesia is claimed to be the world's oldest pyramid, potentially dating back 28,000 years.
